Matthew A. Young

Matthew A. Young is a member of the litigation department in the Freeman Freeman and Smiley’s Los Angeles office.

Mr. Young has a particular focus on commercial lending disputes and intellectual property litigation. He has successfully represented individuals, businesses, and government entities in matters ranging from fraud and negligence to unfair competition and breach of contract.

With regard to intellectual property matters, Mr. Young has prosecuted and defended claims for trade secret misappropriation, trademark and patent infringement, and other matters on behalf of his clients.

Complex cases

Highly experienced in complex cases involving numerous parties and multiple issues, Mr. Young has litigated and resolved multiple class actions, coordinated actions, and other complex litigation, recovering substantial awards for his clients.

Mr. Young has experience in state and federal courts, as well as arbitration. He also has expertise handling international cases against foreign defendants.

He was included in the 2023 edition of Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in the field of Intellectual Property Litigation.

Representative Clients and Matters

Reached very favorable settlement, covered by multiple media outlets, on behalf of a world record breaking jet car racer for damage inflicted to his speed record breaking vehicle while in the custody of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

Obtained judgment and substantial monetary sanctions in favor of defendant coffee shop in lawsuit alleging serious slip-and-fall injuries.

Negotiated favorable settlement on behalf of two first-time homebuyers for seller’s failure to disclose impending construction of a rapid transit corridor immediately adjacent to their new home.

Litigated and reached $5.6 million settlement for class members in class action lawsuit alleging bank’s surreptitious recording of telephone conversations with customers.

Represented thousands of plaintiffs as a member of court-appointed leadership counsel in multi-district litigation and Judicial Council coordination proceeding against manufacturer of defective metal-on-metal prosthetic hip devices.

Represented the County of Santa Clara, California in enforcement action against multiple manufacturers of opioid prescription painkillers for violations of California’s False Advertising and Unfair Competition Laws.
